Introducing...

IMG_0301
...Logan! Logan is our new family member who arrived from Canada the day before Thanksgiving. (Yes, he travelled on the busiest travel day of the year and he did great!) We all had a big empty place in our hearts after losing Ramius and Finn and are thrilled to have little Logan in our family. He is another Golden Retriever, but he is bred to the English/European breed standard instead of the American breed standard. We did some research on other dog breeds, but we kept coming back to Goldens - they are the only breed that hits all of our "wants" in a dog. We talked to a couple of breeders here in the States who breed this type of Golden and due to puppy timing issues, one of them recommended a Canadian breeder who had some older puppies available and this is how we found Logan. He is 5 months old and while we've never started with a puppy this age, we are really enjoying the little extra bit of maturity that 3 months gives a dog. The breeders described his personality as a gentle and loving dog who gravitates to people instead of just playing with the other dogs. This appealed to us since we knew he'd be the only dog in the home.

He arrived Wednesday evening and seemed thrilled to meet us (of course if you'd been on a plane all day the day before Thanksgiving, you'd go home with Jack the Ripper if he volunteered to take you home from the airport). Thursday was a bit crazy but he took it all in stride and met Mom and Dad and Rick and Mindy, who came over for Thanksgiving. Everyone was immediately charmed by him (he's a total love bunny). He also displayed his amazing counter surfing skills as he tried to get samples of Thanksgiving dinner. He is a very relaxed and sweet little guy. He's curious about everything but he leaves things alone when we tell him to. His sweetness and cuteness is almost physically painful and his tail only lies still while he sleeps. (Check out the size of his feet!)

We figured out that his name is Logan yesterday and he's already turning to look at me when I call him by name. Logan was the "regular" name taken by Wolverine of the X-Men. Wolverine is a Canadian lumberjack, so we've got the Canadian connection, and after choosing Logan as his name I found out that the movie Logan's Run was shot here in Dallas, so there's a link to both locations.

As soon as I explain how the computer works to him, Logan will be allowed to blog for himself!

How wonderful. I am so happy for all of you! I had a 'bet' with sister and daughter whether your new pet would be a dog or a cat and *I* won! He looks marvelously wonderfully sweet and intelligent. Hooray for Goldens!

Yeah!!!! Logan is beautiful. I was so hoping this was your announcement for this week. I will love watching him grow, and grow and grow. There is nothing like a Golden Retriever -- just ask my two. May you all have many years of love, cuddling, and memories to make.

Hi Melanie,
I breed my labs to the English standard - it's amazing how much bigger boned and stockier the English bloodlines are over the American one.
My 2 12 year old labs are STILL huge and smart - at 6 months Vinnie could open the refrig door and go shopping. He still remembers how to do that ( I do not leave a towel on the door any more).
I know Logan will never replace Finn but he will worm his way into your hearts and make life easier.
Enjoy your new boy!!!

Congratulations Melanie (and fam)! I'm so happy for you all. I was so distressed by Ramius and Finn passing, I really didn't know what to say. I'm glad you opened your hearts to another fur baby. Finn would want you to. Enjoy the puppy time, it goes so fast.

Oh, what a beautiful and sweet boy! I know you're going to make your new family very, very happy, Logan. And while a new pup can't replace Finn, it's wonderful that you're willing to spread more love in the world so quickly. I'm the same way -- a house just isn't a home without a furbaby, is it? I look forward to seeing Logan as your new knitwear model, and I know he'll do a fabulous job!
